The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Aviation has taken delivery of newly-acquired ultra-modern and multi-functional aircraft fire fighting simulator. The equipment is currently going through installation at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria and will be commissioned for use soon.

The Rector of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, made the disclosure at an interactive session with the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) in Lagos. Capt. Mohammed said: “The college is in the process of installing a fully automated aircraft fire fighting simulator to train firemen. As we speak, the installation is in progress. Yesterday the simulator was hung on its stand and we hope that the installation will be completed in the early part of next year (2020) and we will commence training.”

The Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika during the pre-shipment test in April 2019 had hinted that the acquisition of the equipment will further put Nigerian aviation in a better pedestal as the only modern multi-functional fire fighters’ training equipment in West Africa.

Sirika, when he led aviation agencies chief executives to inspect the equipment in United Kingdom in April said:  “The impact on the nation is that, it will improve our safety through firefighting. Fire safety and fire cover are important aspect of aviation. Without which we cannot open our airports, because we are not safe. Now I will comfortably say that in our region (Africa), perhaps this the best that you have seen. The only one that I know in the region is in Cameroun, which is not as robust as this-not as up to date, not as automatic, as high-tech, not as multi-functional as this one is. This one can fight fire from the wheels, smoke and fire from the cockpit, cargo fire, spill fire, fuselage fire, engine fire, landing gear fire, undercarriage fire and others. This is a multi-functional and it has the capability to train to handle turbo-props and jet engine aircraft, rear-mounted engines, high winged mounted engines. All of this We could say that in Africa, we have got a place where you can get comprehensive firefighting training, from ab-initio training to recurrence training to full professional training of fire safety.

The pre-shipment test, which took place in the United Kingdom showcased the full complements of about 28 possible fire and non-fire scenarios carried out including; cabin fire simulation, cabin smoke, lavatory smoke and the likes.

Also, the facility is capable of providing other simulation tests such as DHC 8 starboard engine, DHC 8 starboard undercarriage, starboard side, CRJ-900 starboard engine, APU, portside, A320 Undercarriage, A320 Port engine, Port Wing, fuel spill burn pit, internal fires among the vast arrays of simulations it can imitate.

The modern-multi-scenario firefighting simulator is capable of delivering training for different types of operational cases involving aircraft in the aerodrome and its vicinity.
