Air Peace Insists On Safety, In-Flight Smoker Convicted In Lagos

Air Peace has registered its insistence on safety in its operation, especially in-flight. This is as a passenger who was caught smoking on board Air Peace flight P4 7558 of December 11, 2019 from Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) – Lagos, was found guilty by an Ogba Magistrate Court and sentenced to two weeks imprisonment with the option of paying 200,000 Naira as a fine.

According to a statement by the carrier through the Corporate Communications Executive, Stanley Olisa:  “The passenger was seen smoking a cigarette before the airline’s flight attendant, Adewale Oyebade, accosted him.  This smoker’s act contravenes a standing of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO,a global aviation regulator on in-flight smoking.

Olisa stated that the efforts of Oyebade must be commended as his safety consciousness made him expose the passenger who was secretly carrying out the act. He added that the flight attendant noticed the passenger’s prohibited act while doing his routine safety checks.

“Let us use this opportunity to reiterate Air Peace’s commitment to global safety standards. We are fully committed to the safety of our passengers and will not compromise that stance for anything”, Olisa asserted.

He charged the flying public to make it an obligation to comply with all established flight safety standards, adding that such measures were meant for their well-being.  The spokesperson, who lauded the court for a speedy judgment, thanked the airline’s passengers for their continued patronage and promised safer and more comfortable flights as 2020 approaches.

In 1992 at the ICAO Assembly (A29-15), during the resolution on Smoking restrictions on international passenger flights, ICAO, “Urges all Contracting States, in the meantime, to take necessary measures as soon as possible to restrict smoking progressively on all international passenger flights with the objective of implementing complete smoking bans by 1 July 1996.”

Globally, no airline currently permits smoking on board its aircraft.
